Adaptive, Confident Communication in International Research Settings
For researchers, scientists and leaders who want to navigate uncertainty, ambiguity, and cultural difference with confidence
Research doesn’t happen in predictable conditions. Researchers need to communicate under pressure, adapt to changing situations, give and receive feedback constructively, and navigate different communication styles. These challenges are particularly pronounced in international research environments.
Our adaptive communication training builds flexibility and confidence through hands-on practice using interactive, scenario-based methods (including improvisation techniques). Participants practice responding to uncertainty, flexing their communication approach, and staying present in challenging moments.
This is a highly interactive workshop that uses methods like role-play and improvisation to embody learning, and try out new ways of practical communication in a safe learning environment. The focus is not on learning cultural models and stereotypes, but on developing communication behaviours that work when contexts are unfamiliar, fluid, or high-stakes.
Want to start with cultural intelligence? Our Intercultural Communication for Researchers skills session provides foundations on cultural awareness and communication patterns. The one-day Adaptive, Confident Communication in International Research Settings training focuses on practicing adaptive communication skills in real time.

Adaptive communication in international research settings training: 1-day applied communication skills intensive
→ Most popular format for building practical cross-cultural communication skills
What’s covered:
- Adaptive communication skills: practicing flexibility when situations are unclear, ambiguous, or rapidly changing
- Active listening and “yes, and…” principles: building on ideas rather than shutting them down, staying present in the moment
- Giving and receiving constructive feedback: clear, direct approaches that navigate different expectations around directness and hierarchy
- Handling uncertainty and ambiguity: communicating confidently when you don’t have all the answers or situations shift unexpectedly
- Non-verbal communication and presence: reading and adapting body language, tone, and energy in the moment
- Cultural awareness in practice: recognising how cultural differences show up in research contexts (directness, hierarchy, time, decision-making) and adapting accordingly
- Scenario-based practice: interactive exercises using real research contexts with peer and facilitator feedback
Methodology:
Uses improvisation-based activities and role-play to practice adaptive communication in a safe, supportive environment. The focus is on building practical skills, not performing.
Delivery:
One full day (6-7 hours) in person (preferred for interactive work)
Perfect for:
Research groups with international team members, EU project teams working across countries, doctoral programmes with diverse cohorts, or anyone regularly collaborating in multicultural research environments.
Delivery options
In-person (strongly recommended):
The interactive, practice-based nature of this training works best in person. Available across Europe.
Online:
Half-day foundations and some modules available online, though in-person is preferred for full engagement.
Tailor This Training to Your Needs
Every research group faces different cross-cultural communication challenges. We can adapt this training to fit your context:
Shorter format?
We offer half-day introductions (3.5 hours) covering core principles with limited practice. Ideal when time is constrained or as a taster before longer training.
Extended format?
We can run 2-day programmes with more extensive practice across multiple scenarios, deeper exploration of specific cultural contexts, and additional modules on team dynamics or leadership communication.
Short introduction?
60-90 minute taster sessions introducing core concepts. Ideal for retreats, team meetings, or conference sessions.
Specific focus areas?
We can emphasise particular aspects: giving feedback, managing conflict, facilitating diverse teams, or adapting presentation styles for international audiences.
What This Training Does NOT Cover
This training focuses on practical communication skills for multicultural research contexts. We do not cover:
- In-depth country-specific cultural guides or language training
- Formal conflict mediation or HR-level diversity training
- Organisational culture change or institutional policy development
- Technical aspects of international project management
Why this matters:
This is hands-on communication skills training using applied practice methods. Participants should come ready to engage actively in exercises and role-play scenarios.

Included in all formats:
- Pre-training discovery call and/or survey to understand your team’s specific challenges
- Tailored scenarios relevant to your research context and cultural mix
- Interactive practice using improvisation-based methods in safe environment
- Post-session resources and frameworks for continued practice
- Support for organisers in planning and participant communication
Perfect for:
- International research teams collaborating across borders
- EU project consortia with partners from multiple countries
- Research leaders and PIs navigating international teams, partnerships, and funding environments.
- Doctoral programmes with diverse international student cohorts
- Research groups hosting visiting researchers or postdocs
- Institutions preparing researchers for international exchanges
- Leadership teams managing multicultural research environments
- Anyone regularly navigating cultural and communication differences in research
