Intercultural Communication for Scientists & Researchers
A practical skills session to help researchers communicate effectively across cultures in international research settings
A focused online session that builds intercultural communication skills for researchers working in multi-cultural settings and diverse, international teams. This 2-hour interactive training helps participants understand how cultural influences shape communication styles, collaboration approaches, and problem-solving, and begin developing practical strategies to adapt their communication and build stronger working relationships across cultures.
Scientists, researchers, students, and staff will learn to recognise cultural dimensions in action and reflect on their own communication patterns, building awareness they can apply whether collaborating with international colleagues, presenting to global audiences, or joining multicultural research teams.
Approach: Interactive skill-building with cultural dimensions framework, self-assessment exercises, roleplay scenarios, and reflection on real-world application.
Practical component: Participants explore their own cultural communication preferences, practice adapting their approach through guided scenarios, and reflect on how to apply these insights in their international research contexts.
Delivery: 2 hours online (Zoom or your preferred platform)
Group size: up 100 participants

What we cover in 2 hours:
- Why intercultural communication matters in research: how cultural influences shape communication styles, collaboration approaches, and problem-solving in international teams
- A framework for understanding cultural dimensions: key patterns that influence behavior and communication across cultures
- Recognise cultural communication tendencies: building self-awareness of how their background shapes their communication approach
- Common cross-cultural challenges in research settings: misunderstandings around directness, hierarchy, time, decision-making, and feedback
- Beginning to adapt communication approaches: strategies for adapting communication styles, clarifying expectations, building trust across cultures
- Communicating effectively in multicultural teams: practical approaches that minimise misunderstandings and foster productive collaboration
Practical work: Participants assess their own cultural communication preferences, practice adapting their approach through guided roleplay scenarios, and reflect on how to apply these insights in their real international research contexts.
Interaction in this Skills Session is designed around guided individual exercises, chat-based reflection, and selected plenary discussion, rather than small-group coaching or personalised feedback.
