Career communication and profile-raising training for researchers

Scientists and researchers build valuable skills during their time in academia and research settings, but often struggle to describe them to the people who matter for their careers.

We help researchers articulate their strengths, achievements and value to employers, funders and collaborators, inside and outside academia.

Communication training and consultancy for science, research and technology in Europe with SciComm Success and Suzanne Whitby

Who it’s for

PhD candidates, postdocs and researchers at any career stage, especially those preparing for job applications, fellowships, funding interviews or a move into industry.

What participants learn

Depending on the workshop they attend:

  • Identifying and naming transferable skills developed through research
  • Crafting elevator pitches for networking, interviews and funding
  • Building a professional profile and personal brand that feels authentic
  • Increasing their visibility, including on LinkedIn and other popular and research social media platforms
  • Presenting themselves confidently in interviews and networking situations

Ways to work together

  • Workshops of half a day to two days covering topics like personal branding and profile, elevator pitches, networking, non-verbal communication, and using LinkedIn and social media
  • Combined with other topics in retreats and summer schools, for example presentation skills plus pitching
  • 1-to-1 coaching for individual researchers

Our researchers don’t like to think of the term “professional branding”, but Suzanne broke it down into something that makes sense for late-stage PhDs starting the process of applying for jobs. The feedback from our graduate group was positive, with several commenting that they have new ways to think of presenting themselves to employers in industry.

We worked with Suzanne and SciComm Success to run a 90-minute live session on networking skills, with a special focus on networking with founders. It was a huge success: 40 researchers, from many different backgrounds, standing up, improvising, pitching. We hope to have Suzanne back again in the future.
