Personal Branding for Scientists & Researchers
A practical skills session to help researchers define and communicate their professional identity
In this focused online session, we demystify personal branding for researchers. This interactive training helps researchers understand that branding isn’t about marketing or self-promotion, but rather about defining and owning their research profile, and managing their reputation strategically AND authentically.
Scientists, researchers, and students will learn how to articulate what makes their work distinctive and begin crafting a brand positioning statement they can use in professional contexts, from conferences to LinkedIn to networking conversations.
Approach: Interactive skill-building with brand mapping exercises, guided reflection, positioning statement development, and peer feedback
Practical component: Participants complete a brand mapping exercise to identify their unique strengths, values, and focus areas, then begin drafting a brand positioning statement they can refine and use across contexts.
Delivery: 2 hours online (Zoom or your preferred platform)
Group size: up 100 participants

What we cover in 2 hours:
- What personal branding really means: reputation and perception as opposed to marketing or self-promotion
- Why personal branding matters in research: for career development, visibility, networking, funding opportunities, and career transitions
- How to identify what makes them distinctive: unique strengths, research focus, values, and purpose through a structured mapping exercise
- Drafting a brand positioning statement: a concise way to communicate who they are, what they do, and what makes their work valuable
- Where to use their positioning: brief exploration of how this clarity helps with conference introductions, online profiles, networking, and professional visibility
Practical work: Participants work through a brand mapping exercise, then begin drafting a brand positioning statement they can refine and use across contexts. They share initial drafts with peers for feedback.
Interaction in this Skills Session is designed around guided individual exercises, chat-based reflection, and selected plenary discussion, rather than small-group coaching or personalised feedback.
Tools: The brand clarity and positioning statement developed in this session can be refined after the workshop and used for LinkedIn profiles, conference bios, networking introductions, and professional conversations.
